The goal of this competition is to design and build a robot that is able to dig and build a berm inside designated zones. The robot will need to traverse an obstacle zone before reaching the excavation and build zones. The robot is remotely controlled from another room with points being deducted for the amount of cameras used on the system. The robots have a 20 minute time limit to build the largest berm inside of the zone.
For this competition a robot was designed to collect 50 kg of BP1 simulant. The robot itself weighs 77 kg which would make the total weight of the robot 127 kg. This large weight required a lot of analysis with ANSYS for static and dynamic analysis. The main threats to the robot were the grousers, wheel mounts, and motor mounts. A 1.5 FOS was placed on the components with the assumption that a wheel would take double the load. This assumption is necessary because the BP1 simulant is considered finer than sand which could lead to events where 2 diagonal wheels are holding up the robot while the other 2 have lost contact with the ground by pushing the simulant away.
